Dakenna honored in Jax Biz Journal as 5th fastest growing private comany in NE FL!

Daniel Kane found himself without a job after the contractor he worked for went under because of the recession. So Morris Adkins and Kane started their own commercial contractor business, Dakenna Development, and incorporated it in 2009.

It was a risky bet to take after the recession when many construction businesses were still struggling, but Kane and Morris focused their business on retail construction — the one segment of the construction business that was growing.

“We knew we were going to be a smaller firm but we knew we could deliver,” Kane said.

That small firm has grown since its inception. It was selected as the contractor to lead the Florida expansion of Newk’s Express and, in 2011, it was selected to build three Moe’s Southwest Grill locations simultaneously in Simon Mall properties. The company has built multiple Jimmy Johns locations in the Southeast and plans to build more after securing 19 more contracts in the first quarter of 2013.

This growth has allowed its commercial remodeling revenue to increase from $825,000 in 2010 to $2.1 million in 2011. The increased revenue allowed the company to climb the Business Journal’s Commercial Remodelers list from No. 16 in 2011 to No. 11 in 2012. Companies were ranked by area commercial remodeling revenue.

Kane attributes this success to being an honest and transparent company: “Doing what you say you’re going to do,” he said.

A large portion of the company’s clientele is repeat customers because of sticking to this principle, Kane said.

In the coming years, the company’s goals include diversifying its restaurant buildouts and obtaining new construction contracts while providing the service clients expect.
